Moon Atlas 3D is a lunar mapping and 3D terrain modeling program, developed for amateur astronomers and astronomy students to explore our nearest celestial object in astounding detail. The program uses Open GL to display the Moon as a virtual globe that can be rotated, zoomed and navigated using touch and swipe gestures. It also includes high resolution maps to match the view through telescope eyepieces. It features a full set of USGS database domes and the Charles A. Wood Lunar 100 as well as a unique library of over 8,200+ features and landing sites. Phases and librations are displayed in real time, as well as an Astronomical Ephemeris.

A number of different formation types are also available to be studied, such as maria (formerly thought to be seas of water), lava domes and impact craters. The program can also be used to identify lunar eclipses, supermoons and new moons as they occur across your local sky.

Other functions include a Moon calendar, an Astronomical Ephemeris (with rise, set, civil/nautical/astronomical twilight times) and a 'Globe' mode that lets you spin the Moon around to see far side features. It has a search function that can move the Moon globe to a searched feature and can switch between Moon aspect and libration views.

For those interested in exploring the Solar System beyond our own planet, there's Planisphere, which can alert you when the International Space Station or Chinese spacecraft Tiangong 2 are visible in your location. And for a deeper exploration, the Digital Universe Atlas, which has mapped every satellite, planet, star and galaxy to scale and measured locations according to astronomical observations.
